Literary Term: Archetype

Archetype:

  •  An original model or type after which other similar things are patterned; a prototype
Example:
  1. "'Frankenstein' . . . 'Dracula' . . . 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' . . . the archetypes that have influenced all subsequent horror stories" (New York Times).
